The Real Cost of a Wix Site: Domains, Email and Apps

Filed Aug 18, 2026Re-examined Aug 21, 2026

Ask how much does Wix cost and you will be quoted a plan price; ask what a Wix site costs and the answer requires an audit. The gap between those two figures — the domain that renews after its free year, the business email no plan includes, the apps that accumulate at a few dollars each — is what this proceeding exists to put on the record. We itemize each exhibit, then run the full arithmetic for three typical setups, year one against renewal year.

The plan price is the opening bid

For orientation: the four premium plans run $17/mo (Light), $29/mo (Core), $39/mo (Business) and $159/mo (Business Elite) on annual billing, with month-to-month costing $7 to $13 more per month depending on tier. Our Wix pricing breakdown examines what each tier buys; this file concerns everything the plan price does not say. Three exhibits follow.

Exhibit A: the domain, after its free year

Every premium plan on annual billing includes a voucher covering a custom domain's first year — a genuine saving, and the reason our year-one columns below show no domain line. The voucher's expiry is where the ledger starts moving. A .com through Wix renews at around $19.35 per year in the US, and renewals across common domain endings run roughly $14.95 to $24.95 annually. Bought outright without the voucher, a first-year .com typically costs around $13.35 to $17.35. One courtesy noted for the record: WHOIS domain privacy comes included with Wix domains per current sources — older guides citing a separate fee for it appear out of date.

Exhibit B: business email, sold separately

No Wix plan, at any tier, includes a mailbox at your own domain. Email is sold through Wix via Google Workspace at $6 per user per month — $72 per user per year, on top of whatever plan you hold. Some sources cite a lower first-year promotional rate of around $4.95 per user, but promo pricing appears to vary by period, so the prudent ledger budgets the full $6. For a five-person business, note the multiplication: $360 a year before the website itself costs a cent.

Exhibit C: app creep

The App Market offers hundreds of apps — Wix's own materials cite both 500-plus and 800-plus — and the paid ones typically run $3 to $20 per month, with outliers reaching several hundred. No single app strains a budget; the pattern that does is accretion. A review widget here, a booking add-on there, a pop-up tool for a campaign that ended last spring, and the site quietly carries $30 a month in subscriptions nobody re-examined. A single mid-range app at $10/mo adds $120 to the annual bill, which is why exactly one appears in our third worked example below.

The worked examples, year one against renewal

Start with the solo case. A portfolio on Light, annual billing, comes to about $204 in year one, with the domain covered by the voucher. At renewal the domain joins the bill and the total moves to roughly $223 — a modest step, and Light owners who skip email and apps largely escape this article's warnings.

The small-business case on Core is where the gap opens. Year one at full price is about $348 with the domain voucher applied; catch one of Wix's frequent 50%-off promotions — in periods when Core is included in it — and year one falls to roughly $174. The renewal year tells a different story. Plan at full list ($348), domain at around $19, one Workspace mailbox at $72, and a single $10/mo app at $120: about $559 for the year. That is roughly 1.6 times a non-promo first year, and more than three times a promo first year — same site, same plan, no new features.

What a Wix site actually costs
SetupYear-one costRenewal-year cost
Solo portfolio (Light)~$204 (plan; domain covered by voucher)~$223 (plan + ~$19 domain)
Small business (Core)~$348 full price / ~$174 with a 50% promo~$367 (plan + ~$19 domain)
Small business + email + one app~$540 full price / ~$366 with a 50% promo~$559 (plan + domain + $72 email + ~$120 app)

All figures assume annual billing and one Workspace user; the promo column applies only when a given sale actually includes that plan, which Wix's offers do not always do for Light and Core. The court's finding: the renewal year, not the first, is the honest price of a Wix site, and any budget built on the promo figure is built on sand.

Keeping the bill honest

  • Bill annually. The monthly surcharge across a year outstrips the flexibility it buys, and month-to-month billing forfeits the domain voucher entirely.
  • Time the promo, but read its exclusions. Sitewide sales reappear roughly every two weeks by our observation, so waiting days can halve year one — provided your plan is actually covered by the offer in question.
  • Diarize the renewal date the day you subscribe. Renewal reverts to full list price, documented user reports show increases from 20% past 50%, and some report as little as two weeks' notice of the charge.
  • Audit apps quarterly. Cancel anything that has not earned its line item since the last audit; app creep is the most reversible charge on the entire bill.

The finding

None of this indicts Wix as overpriced — a solo site near $223 a year or a small business near $559 remains defensible against the alternatives once you price your own time. The indictment is reserved for budgeting from the promotional banner. Enter the ecosystem with the renewal-year figure written down and the exhibits above audited annually, and the bill will hold no surprises. Whether the platform earns those figures on the merits — ease of use, SEO standing, and the objections we sustain against it — is settled in our full Wix review.

Cross-examination: the Wix bill

How much does a Wix site cost per year, realistically?
On annual billing: a solo portfolio on Light runs about $204 in year one and roughly $223 in a renewal year. A small business on Core runs about $348 in year one at full price, and around $559 in a renewal year once you add the domain renewal, one business mailbox and a single mid-range app.
Is the free Wix domain really free?
For one year, on annual billing, yes — all four premium plans include a voucher covering a custom domain's first year. From year two the domain renews at Wix's standard rate, around $19.35 annually for a .com in the US, with common endings running roughly $14.95 to $24.95. WHOIS privacy is included per current sources.
Does any Wix plan include business email?
No. Email at your own domain is not bundled with any plan, including Business Elite. Wix sells it via Google Workspace at $6 per user per month, or $72 per user per year. Some sources mention a first-year promotional rate near $4.95 per user, but that varies by period — budget the full rate.
Why did my Wix renewal price jump?
Because first-year pricing is usually promotional, and renewal reverts to full list price. Documented user reports show renewal increases from 20% to beyond 50% — one two-year plan rose from $440 to $680 — and the domain voucher expires at the same time. Some users report only about two weeks' notice, so diarize the date.
